It must be springtime in S. Florida. For the last couple of weeks we have been seeing the beautiful Monarch butterfly 🦋 stalking the milkweed. Today low and behold, the catapillars have arrived. Immediately devouring our fresh milkweed.
These little creatures are voracious eaters, capable of consuming an entire milkweed leaf in less than five minutes. They gain about 2,700 times their original weight, and in the process, excrete an abundant quantity of “frass” (or waste) poop tonyou and me 💩🙄.
The monarch butterfly uses their eyes to locate flowers, they use their antennas to smell the nectar and the minute receptors lodged in their feet called “tarsi” come in handy to taste sweet substances.
I love watching the stages as they go through their metamorphosis. Somehow you become attached and become a rooting fan for their successful journey. It’s cool watching the enlarged catapillars scurry off to “J-up” to begin the next stage of their lives as a chrysalis.
Patiently waiting for the day that will come when the chrysalis will break open and a new beautiful sunshine orange monarch butterfly emerges. Ready to face the challenges ahead and begin the cycle all over again. So cool!
